Below are a couple of ideas for how the town could be layed out, and where.
I'm torn between most of the town being outside, or inside. Both offer lots of possibilities from floating buildings, small boats, bridges that are high enough for small boats to go under, multi-level buildings, docks, towers, using the environment for buildings, such as a crag or two, with a bridge suspended between them.
I think using the internal idea would be easier on us, in regards to overall occlusion. We can eaisly split it up into several chunks, so players won't have to see the whole thing at once. However, this can be done externaly as well, but it would have to be done with crags and large (or lots) buildings.
Share your thoughts on what seems like more fun; and do note that neither of these are finalized, just trying to get everyone on the same page in regards to our options... there is an infinite number of ways to layout the town exactly... and the more interesting it is, the better!

Love it. Especially the idea of the dock world continuing into a cave!
ReplyDeleteI was also thinking about an expansive cave-dock behind the waterfalls for the pirate ship, with an inner lair and gold and treasure all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI agree it would help contain the lighting to make it easier on engine rendering. I thought about the idea of having a harbor of boats while working on the outer cove concepts, with different types of boats (oriental/dragon style boats for ninjas, mail-man boats, warrior/celtic boats, idk, the different job classes defined as boats and stuff), along with a pier community, but I think there's a danger of it all looking too busy and jumbled with no focal point/centerpiece from a distance.
I like the inside harbor idea though, seems more like a pirate to be secretive about their whereabouts and loot and stuff. Maybe outside could be houses for boat repair, fishing, a lookout house, etc.
